The recent earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand have left a devastating impact on the affected communities, and the people of Okinawa are mourning the loss of lives and destruction caused by these natural disasters. As they remember the historical ties between their region and Southeast Asian nations, Okinawans stand in solidarity with the victims and their families.

The Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled over the islands of Okinawa from the 15th to 19th century, had strong trade relations with Southeast Asian countries, particularly with Siam, now known as Thailand. Ryukyu sent over 110 formal trade missions to Southeast Asia, leading to a rich exchange of culture and ideas. The ties between Okinawa and Southeast Asia run deep, and the recent earthquakes have brought these historical connections to the forefront.

Ryukyu’s trade relations with Siam fostered cross-cultural exchange, whose impact can still be seen. Ryukyuan and Thai culture shares some notable similarities, particularly in dance, stone working, traditional clothing, cuisine, and theater.

“I’m very sad to hear of the earthquake in Thailand and Myanmar,” wrote Robert Kajiwara on X. “Luchu (“Ryukyu”) historically had close, friendly relations with Siam, and some Siamese cultural traits can still be seen in Luchu (“Okinawa”) today.”

The Okinawa Myanmar Association held a charity concert at Naha City Community Center to support the earthquake victims. Around 150 people attended. It is estimated that around 700 people from Myanmar are currently living in Okinawa.
